The Browse function is accessed via the Home Page or via the Browse Tab in the banner on each page.
The are three categories of Browse lists:
Browse People
Lists biographies alphabetically according to their subject's surname.
To find a list of all people whose surnames begin with B, click on the B link under the People heading on the Browse page. The Browse People - B index is displayed as follows, showing the first page of names. Click on next or the page number links to move from page to page.
The Index box on the left-hand side has two sections each with different functions:
- Use the alphabetical list to jump between the different Browse People pages.
- Use the name ranges to jump to a specific list of names. For example, John Henry Barrow falls on the page which starts with Barron and ends with Bath. Click on the Barron to Bath link to go directly to this page.
To swap between the three search categories click on the appropriate Browse People, Browse Occupations, Browse Authors links located just under the banner on the left-hand side.
Browse Occupations
Groups biographies alphabetically according to their subject's occupation, as interpreted from the article text.
To find, for example, all biographies about 'radio announcers' click on the R link under the Occupation heading on the Browse page. The Browse Occupations - R index is displayed showing the first page of names. Click on next or the page number links to move from page to page to find the desired occupation.
The number listed in parenthesis to the right of each occupation e.g. 'radio announcer (23 people)' indicates that 23 people within the ADB Online worked as a radio announcer. To view the full list of radio announcers click on the (23 people) link. To view a specific biography within this list, click on the name link.
To swap between the three search categories click on the appropriate Browse People, Browse Occupations, Browse Authors links located just under the banner on the left-hand side.
Browse Authors
Groups biographies alphabetically according to Author. The Browse Authors list can be accessed from the home page, and also by clicking on the Browse tab under the banner on every page.
To find a list of all authors whose surnames begin with G, click on the G link under Browse - Authors. The Browse Author - G index is displayed showing the first page of names. Click on next or the page number links to move from page to page, or alternatively use the Index box on the left-and side to navigate the pages. (See the Browse People section above for more about the Index box).
The biographies under each author are hyperlinked. Click on a biography to go to that biography page.
